Madame Butterfly

Cio-Cio-San

A reflection of prejudices at the time, Puccini depicts Cio-Cio-San as weak and obedient, submissive to the masculinity of the West. More recently, Cio-Cio-San has been reincarnated as the heroine Kim, of Miss Saigon, which, though sharing many of the Orientalist tropes of its predecessor, gives the character an underlying strength and shows the changing power dynamics between East and West. David Hwang's play M. Butterfly has since subverted these tropes entirely, resurrecting Cio-Cio-San as Song Li Ling, who turns out to be not only a man cross-dressing as a woman, but also a spy sent to seduce her current suitor in order to infiltrate the French government. Cio-Cio-San's agency has only grown with each revival, and adaptations in all mediums encourage modern audiences' to enjoy performances whilst retaining the ability to think critically

Benoit Blanc

Detective Benoit Blanc embodies the formidable relentlessness of Sherlock Holmes, the epicurean nature of Arsène Lupin, the flamboyancy of Hercule Poirot and the eccentricity of Columbo. In his timeline, he is considered to be the last of the "great" detectives. Unafraid to ask the important questions in life, Blanc is untiring in his perusal of the truth for truth's sake. Though tenacious in his quest for knowledge, this does not interfere with his care for others (often the underdogs), and he always look out for those he takes under his wing, ensuring that justice is enacted so that closure may be had.

Last of the Gentleman Sleuths

Goddess of Strife and Discord

Eris

In her Graeco-Roman adaptation, Eris has 2 personas: one which drives healthy competition between friends and neighbours (and so promoting even the lethargic to toil), and another fostering war and battle, where it was said that her targeting of both sides was a statement on how all such violence was condemned, no matter the motive. Often depicted as a young woman or androgynous youth, and associated with snaked, foxes and ravens, Eris is a representation of the unpredictable nature of life and a warning about those who only wish to cause controversy.

Arcturus

26 times larger than the sun, and thought to be up to 8.5 billion years old, Arcturus is the brightest star in the constellation of Boötes. Derived from the Greek for "Guardian of Bears" due to the star's proximity to Ursas Major and Minor, mythology dictates that the goddess Hera, enraged upon learning of Zeus' affair with Callisto, turns her into a bear. Callisto is then unknowingly hunted by her son, Arcas, and moments before he strikes, Zeus takes pity on them, turning Callisto into the constellation Ursa Major and Arcas into Boötes, so that the son may always protect his mother.

Child of Loki

Alex Fierro

A character exceedingly proud, of her heritage, gender and creations, Fierro is unashamed of his identity and refuses to care about other peoples opinions of him. Having reclaimed her heritage despite misgivings from her peers, Fierro has embraced his individuality, unafraid to correct those with misconceptions but ultimately not caring if they are too close-minded to understand. Despite being slow to trust and not traditionally affectionate, he is incredibly snarky and protective of friends. Unapologetically himself, those who attempt to confine Fierro to a single category often find themselves on the end of her sharp tongue.
