About the Website

What's with the name?

#livelaughlovecrydie was initially a phrase coined over a phone call between two friends, bouncing ideas around for a groupchat name. It was said in jest, an ironic twist on the many "live laugh love" signs that have been appearing in the last few years. Never intended to be taken seriously, it was merely an observation on the contradictions between the life we live, and the life we portray to others.

And yet, 18 months later, a throwaway statement made by a 17-year-old student, drowning in the workload of university applications, extra-curriculars and exams, has led us here:

A fair proportion of people (particularly those in medicine, high level sports, academia, conservatoires, or any such career pathway which requires huge time commitments and frequently causes high levels of pressure to be felt) gradually lose the ability to engage with interests outside their immediate field of study. Of course we all have to make a living, but whatever happened to intellectual diversity? To breadth of study? To a well-rounded lifestyle?

And so, this website is now a place for young people to write: blogs, reactions, commentary or whatever else may come to mind, on any topic they feel qualified to talk about. It will be messy in places, because we're by no means experts, but such is reality. It's about time we stopped defining ourselves only by our choice in career.

This site is an exercise in intellectual curiosity, patience and learning. Please, bear with us as we get to grips with running a website for the first time.

About the Authors

A note on pseudonyms

Whilst this platform does not hold any political affiliations or leanings, and in fact encourages posts expressing contradictory thoughts and opinions, the comfort of our authors is of the utmost importance.

It is inevitable that not all readers will share the same opinions as the authors, when the authors themselves rarely agree. However, whilst the writing is not intended to be inflammatory, in the interest of safety and convenience (and our students' future job prospects), we have chosen to use pseudonyms.

Plus, it makes us seem mysterious ;)

The Authors

Some authors have chosen to write under multiple pseudonyms, where they regularly write about vastly different areas of life and want to differentiate between these personas (although there are no restrictions on what a pseudonym may publish).

Each pseudonym has been carefully chosen by the author to reflect an aspect of themselves, or their goals. You can read more about each choice here.

(TBC)

Yet to choose a suitable pseudonym, the founder is an (indecisive) student with wide ranging interests across academia, music, sport and activism.

Good luck finding a common theme being written about.

Cio-Cio-San

The titular character in Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, Cio-Cio-San is a young Japanese geisha who unwisely forsakes her community to marry a Western man. Revivals of this plot reflect changing, and even the subversion of past prejudices. Unsurprisingly, expect writing on the performing arts.

Benoit Blanc

The star protagonist of the Knives Out films, Detective Blanc is the epitome of the phrase "knowledge for knowledge's sake;" catching the criminal is just a happy byproduct.

Writing here encompasses philosophy, literature and debate.

Eris

Eris is the Greek goddess of strife and discord. She is not always malevolent in nature, often times being a driving force for growth. Though no love was lost for her, she was always highly honored.

Pieces of a particularly controversial nature are likely to be published under Eris.

Arcturus

Lying just outside the podium positions, Arcturus is the 4th brightest star in the sky and the brightest in the northern hemisphere.

A star holding significance to the over 11 ancient civilisations, Arcturus' pieces provide commentary on history, culture and politics.

Alex Fierro

A child of the Norse god Loki, from Rick Riordan's Magnus Chase series, Fierro is sarcastic, witty and incredibly astute. Openly genderfluid, he is not afraid to be outspoken, and does not take kindly to threats towards those she considers her own.

Expect writing about all things queer.
